They Are Back Again, Don't Miss Them!

The whales are back for another season in the Hawaiian Islands.  December brought the arrival of thousands of Humpback whales migrating from the warm waters of Alaska.  They have all been feeding and plumping up for the long journey to the warm waters of Hawaii.

These wonderful creatures will spend the next four months giving birth to calves and nursing them so that they are capable of swimming back to the Alaskan waters.  The Humpback whales are regaining their population after decreasing to less than about 2,000 in recent times.  The whaling communities around the world almost brought them to extinction.  Today there are over an estimated 10,000 Humpback whales for this region.

All of the Hawaiian Islands are able to view these massive creatures through whale watching boating excursions or viewing from beach or roadside.  They put on shows that astonish the visitors and locals every year.  The adult whales can be seen teaching the young how to breach and swim.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Maui?

Maui is beautiful any time of year, but there are certain times of the year it might be more quiet and less expensive!

Here are some tips to think about before deciding when to visit Maui.

  • Maui can be more quiet when children are back in school.  After mid-September through mid-November, Maui is a little bit slower.  The schools are in session and the travelers tend to be couples more than families.
  • The last two weeks of November can get busy on Maui.  Many people visit for the Thanksgiving holiday.
  • The weeks between the Thanksgiving holiday and Christmas holiday (First 2 weeks of December) are usually very slow on the island.  Great time for deals on airline flights and condo bookings along with activities!
  • The time between Christmas and New Year is very busy!
  • Maui can get busy during the cold months on the mainland.  Everyone likes to escape the snow and rain!
  • The end of February up to Spring Break is usually slow.  Most spring breakers and families start rolling in mid-March and it lasts until mid to late April.
  • The first two weeks of May is a great time to visit Maui.  Most schools are in until mid-May first part of June therefore May is usually quiet.
  • Summers are usually filled with people and the island is jumping!  It is warm and sunny with lots of action!
  • The Humpback Whales visit the islands in December through April.  They are a wonderful part of Maui's beauty.

Maui is beautiful any time of year.  It depends what type of vacation you are looking for.

Hana Maui

Did you know one of the top ten travel destinations rated this year is in Maui Hawaii?  The road to Hana was recently rated in the top 10 tourist destinations and scenic drives from two travel experts.

The Hana journey is a 60 mile stretch of hair pin twists and turns on the northeast side of Maui Hawaii. Each turn brings you to breathtaking valleys with waterfalls and lush greenery.  On the opposite side of the road you can see the various blues and greens of the Pacific Ocean.  The "road to Hana" also has 54 one-lane bridges so make sure you keep your eye on the road!  No matter how many times I have taken this route, I am always amazed at the beauty that Maui has to offer.

The trip to Hana is a full day event.  I recommend starting no later than 7 a.m.  The road to Hana is full of such wonderful things to take in.  There are magnificent waterfalls along the way, beaches to explore and of course the small town of Hana.  Hana is a beautiful Hawaiian town at the end of the road.  It is definately something to see and cherish.  The Hawaiian culture is full of wonderful stories and wonderful people.

Before going to Hana here are some things to pack for your trip...

  • Map
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect Repellent
  • Water/Drinks
  • Food for lunch
  • Cell Phone
  • I.D.
  • Swimsuits (For those waterfalls and black sand beaches)
  • Full tank of gas
  • Camera (Don't forget pictures of the Seven Sacred Pools)
  • Towels
  • Sunglasses
  • Lots of patience!
  • For children; bring car games and let them take their own pictures with a disposable camera.

Have a ball and enjoy the special sights and sounds of Hana!
